Event Recap: FAST 500
Eleven cars and fifteen members hit the road for a weekend that perfectly captured what Club Wheelhouse is all about—great cars, even better people, and unforgettable shared experiences.
From a private, behind-the-scenes visit with Singer Vehicle Design to hot laps at the newly reimagined Willow Springs Raceway, every stop offered something rare and special. We were treated to a stunning private collection, savored a Michelin-starred lunch in Los Alamos, and carved our way through some of California’s most spectacular back roads. What made it truly memorable wasn’t just the driving or the destinations—it was the camaraderie, the conversations at fuel stops, and the feeling that we were part of something you can’t find anywhere else. This Fast 500 set a new benchmark for what a Wheelhouse weekend can be.

Jody Scheckter’s 1971 F3 Merlyn Mk21 (Chassis 318) — F3 to F1
Some cars are significant because of what they are. This one is significant because of what it represents: a moment when raw talent, grit, and opportunity lined up — and a future Formula One World Champion took the fast route to the top.
Chassis 318 is a Merlyn Mk21 Formula 3 car that Jody Scheckter put together as a 20-year-old newcomer to Europe in 1971, fresh off winning Formula Ford in South Africa. With support from Colchester Racing Development, a loaned Holbay engine, and Firestone tires, Scheckter assembled the car himself and jumped into the second half of the British F3 season — a serious move in a category filled with professional teams and drivers chasing the same ladder.
The car was competitive immediately: a podium in his first outing, followed by multiple wins soon after. Just over a year later, Scheckter made his Formula One debut for McLaren at Watkins Glen — an extraordinary ascent in a remarkably short window, and one that still reads like racing folklore.
Fresh off a restoration, the car will now see the track again with member Ben Zlotkin campaigning it in vintage series, including the upcoming Velocity Invitational at Sonoma Raceway.
